About the Committee
Theater and Performance Studies (TAPS) seeks to animate the intersection of practice and theory in the arts. TAPS offers studio classes, seminars, and studio-seminars, which combine academic and practice-based inquiry.

Performance
Whether you're stepping onstage for the first time or bringing years of experience, TAPS offers a range of ways to perform, create, and collaborate at UChicago. From mainstage productions and workshops to devised work and student-run showcases, there's a place for every kind of performer and storyteller. Our professionally-led season provides hands-on mentorship from faculty, staff, and guest artists, while our vibrant community of 60+ registered student organizations ensures that opportunities to get involved are always within reach.
Dance
Students of all abilities — from beginners to those with pre-professional aspirations — can engage with dance through courses, seminars, co-curricular classes, and a network of student organizations. Professional artists and scholars guide this work, fostering a vibrant dance community that extends from campus into the broader Chicago area.
Undergraduate
The undergraduate Theater and Performance Studies (TAPS) program seeks to animate the intersection of theory and practice in the arts. From its inception, the program has experimented with form, thought, and process, and has capitalized on the tremendous commitment of our undergraduates, the passionate engagement of a remarkable cross-section of Chicago-area artists, and the diverse interests of our faculty. The opening of the Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts in 2012 enabled ideas to spring to life in state-of-the-art theaters, labs, and design studios.
Graduate
The University of Chicago's TAPS PhD program is a personalized, interdisciplinary program where students combine theatre and performance studies with a joint doctorate in a cooperating field such as Music, Classics, or Comparative Literature, among others. The program's five components — coursework, oral exams, practice-based research, a joint dissertation, and teaching — reflect its blend of academic and performance-based inquiry, typically requiring up to one additional year of study compared to single-degree programs.
