About
The Division of the Arts & Humanities is one of four graduate divisions at the University of Chicago, offering 19 graduate degree programs across 16 departments and committees. The Division is also the home of the academic departments and faculty who oversee the 26 undergraduate majors and minors in the arts and humanities offered in the College.
With more than 215 core research faculty and an additional 170 full-time academic appointees in the Division, humanistic scholarship, teaching, and arts practice at the University of Chicago has remarkable breadth and depth, on a scale and with a level of research impact that has few peers.
Each year, approximately 650 students from around the world pursue PhD, MFA, and MA degrees in programs consistently ranked among the best in the nation. The Division of the Arts & Humanities trains and mentors the next generation of scholars, teachers, and multidisciplinary leaders in the arts, cultural organizations, and other professions.
Our programs integrate critical scholarship and creative practice, feeding our students’ deep hunger to think capaciously, experiment, and explore new frontiers of research. Students take part in the classic small-seminar model, led by field-defining scholars, while also pursuing experiential and public-facing learning through the division’s many interdisciplinary research centers and arts units.
Dual-degree programs and innovative courses—such as Media Arts and Design in Cinema Studies or Theater and Performance Studies in English—anchor learning across multiple disciplines. Collaboration thrives across the University, from the Social Sciences Division (SSD) and the Divinity School to Computer Science, Neuroscience, and Medicine. Through multiple partnerships, humanistic perspectives and insights amplify the impact of real-world decisions about law, public health, climate, technology, and society.
