Academic Affairs
The activities of Divisional faculty members drive the world-renowned research and pedagogic work of the University of Chicago. The results of these efforts are published books, influential conferences, new works of art, important research discoveries, and graduates whose critical thinking and scholarship has given UChicago its reputation for passionate teaching as well as innovative thinking. An infrastructure of appointment processes, financial policies and procedures, personnel practices, and technology makes these achievements possible.
Students
The Dean of Students Office within the Division of the Arts & Humanities provides clear and critical support structures to students and advances the academic mission through an inclusive and student-centered approach. Historic Achievements
Founded in 1930, the Division of the Arts & Humanities has remained the heart of UChicago’s tradition of innovation in higher education. From formalizing emerging twentieth-century fields and disciplines to pioneering interdisciplinary study, the Division has continually advanced humanistic knowledge while fostering a distinctive model of liberal education.
Divisional Leadership
The Division of the Arts & Humanities is led by Dean Deborah L. Nelson and a leadership team who work to ensure the vitality and excellence of UChicago’s arts and humanities programs. They oversee curriculum development, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and support faculty and student initiatives across the Division’s 16 departments and committees.
