I'm an organist and music theorist, with a primary focus on what lyrics do in music and how listeners (don't) perceive them. My book project, Audible Nonsense: (Not) Listening to Lyrics, from Jazz to K-pop combines ideas and methods from music theory and linguistics to examine the musical and social implications of inattention to lyrics in a variety of contexts and repertoires. Other projects center on intra-East Asian globalization in K-pop and J-pop (with Liam Hynes-Tawa and Yiqing Mitty Ma), pre-1911 Chinese music theory, and music's role in the history of anthropology (with Chris Batterman Cháirez). I also perform and teach on organ, harpsichord, and piano, with an emphasis on historical performance of European "early music." jacobreedorgan.com
