Summer Registration
Students register for the summer quarter during the eighth week of the spring quarter. In addition to registration, students may change enrollments (add/drop) in weeks nine through eleven of spring quarter. Summer tuition for doctoral students on a Division of the Arts & Humanities fellowship is covered.
Students who receive summer student loans are required to register for summer quarter. Students who receive summer work-study money are not required to register. Please direct questions regarding summer student loans and/or the federal work-study program to the Student Loan Administration. Students who hold non-work study positions (including teaching at the Summer Language Institute and the Graham School) are not required to register for summer quarter.
UChicago has created an Academic and Professional Reading Institute (APRI) which will oversee Reading for Research courses, and as a result, those will now be non-credit seminars. The University is also offering regular language courses as they have done in the past through Summer Session, which are for credit.
Incoming PhD students are able to register for those seminars, but if they do, they will not matriculate early. The Division will cover the cost of the seminar, but students will not begin receiving a stipend until Autumn and their time to degree clock will begin then as well. They should sign up for the desired course at this website. The registration cost will be paid in full using a discount code received from department administrators.
Incoming PhD students are also able to register for full language classes in Summer via Summer Session. These students will matriculate in Summer , so they will begin receiving a stipend in the summer, and their time to degree clock will also begin in summer quarter. The student should contact Sarah Hill at (shill26@uchicago.edu) and tell her which class they want to take by mid-May. We cannot accept any summer quarter matriculants after that date. Tuition will be covered for PhD studens.
Master’s students enrolling in language courses taught over the summer at the University of Chicago will be charged tuition for those courses. Language courses taken over the summer by master’s students usually will not count towards their degree requirements.
