Historic Achievements
Founded in 1930, the Division of the Arts & Humanities has remained the heart of UChicago’s tradition of innovation in higher education. From formalizing emerging twentieth-century fields and disciplines to pioneering interdisciplinary study, the Division has continually advanced humanistic knowledge while fostering a distinctive model of liberal education.
Divisional Leadership
The Division of the Arts & Humanities is led by Dean Deborah L. Nelson and a leadership team who work to ensure the vitality and excellence of UChicago’s arts and humanities programs. They oversee curriculum development, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and support faculty and student initiatives across the Division’s 16 departments and committees.
Career Opportunities
Our division is home to over 400 faculty and other academic appointees and over 100 dedicated staff members who work to support the academic pursuits of graduate and undergraduate students. We believe that our strength lies in the diverse, talented individuals who make up our division. We are committed to attracting, developing, supporting, and retaining a dynamic workforce through expert consultation, compassionate services, and innovative solutions.
Alumni Engagement
The Division of Arts & Humanities is grateful for the alumni, friends, and neighbors who support our community and believe in the transformative power of research, education, and free expression. We are proud of our remarkable students and faculty who evidence these values in their work and through the wide range of arts and humanities programs they support on campus and beyond.
