MFA Student Teaching
Teaching Assistantships
To accommodate students' interests in teaching, the department offers paid teaching assistantships in most Visual Arts courses via GradGargoyle. Teaching assistantships are applied for in the preceding summer quarter for the following academic year (Fall, Winter, Spring). MFA students are also encouraged to apply for assistantships in other departments across the university.
PhD Student Teaching
The Division of the Arts & Humanities worked with departments to create tailored pedagogical training plans, which outline requirements related to teaching. The Division articulated a clear analogy between learning to become a scholar and learning to become a teacher.
Graduate Student Teaching
This section provides information about teaching responsibilities and opportunities for graduate students in the Arts & Humanities Division.
Most first-year Arts & Humanities graduate students are not allowed to teach; rather, they are expected to focus on their coursework.
Summer Registration
Students register for the summer quarter during the eighth week of the spring quarter. In addition to registration, students may change enrollments (add/drop) in weeks nine through eleven of spring quarter. Summer tuition for doctoral students on a Division of the Arts & Humanities fellowship is covered.

Add/Drop Period
In autumn, winter, and spring, the first three weeks of the quarter mark the period to add/drop courses, language reading examinations, and make other enrollment changes. In summer quarter, the add/drop schedule varies based on the length of the course.
Academic Year Registration
In autumn, registration is held the week before the quarter begins. In winter, spring, and summer, registration is held during the eighth week of the prior quarter.
Students request their courses through my.uchicago. From the "My Academics" drop down menu found on the homepage, students must select "Classes and Registration" followed by "My Classes" to access the registration portal.
