Course Enrollment
Enrolling in courses occurs quarterly; students register through their home departments. This section outlines general registration procedures.
Academic Requirements and Milestones
Departments and academic programs within the Division of the Arts & Humanities have specific academic requirements, milestones, and pedagogical training that are required of students in order to complete the degree program. If these academic requirements are not met, there may be additional consequences for the student, including but not limited to, academic probation, changes to enrollment status, additional program requirements needed, and/or mandatory meetings with departmental faculty.
Support Person Policy
For meetings related to academic standing and academic progress, support persons are not permitted to be present in conversations between an individual student and faculty. Students can bring an individual to provide emotional and personal support to them before or after any such meeting, but that individual cannot be in the meeting directly. Students can also speak with the Dean of Students should additional support and resources be needed.
Faculty Departures: Impact on Student Advising
In the event a faculty member leaves the University or passes away, the academic department, in collaboration with Divisional leadership, will aid any student who was being advised by the faculty member in question with replacement mentorship in research, dissertation committee membership, etc. The Division of the Arts & Humanities, with departmental leadership approval, will allow exceptions as needed to dissertation committee composition.
Leave of Absence and Withdrawal From the University
Students who wish to apply for a leave of absence must complete the Leave of Absence Request Form. Students should also contact ahd-dos@uchicago.eduand/or their department for questions/concerns.
