Arts Research & Teaching
UChicago Arts promotes research and teaching as central to a transformative academic experience that blends creative practice with rigorous inquiry. Drawing on the University’s rich tradition of cross-disciplinary innovation and its vibrant South Side setting and legacy, we foster an environment where faculty and students explore the arts through scholarly investigation and hands-on creation. Our integrative arts philosophy connects theory and practice, encouraging artists, scholars, and students to challenge conventions and contribute new perspectives to campus and beyond.
Arts Research and Practice
Arts research at the University of Chicago is dynamic, collaborative, and globally connected. Faculty and students engage in cutting-edge scholarship—from object-driven investigations in art history and fieldwork in ethnomusicology, to experimentation in media arts and design and new approaches in creative writing. Our programs support original research across continents and disciplines. Students work alongside renowned faculty, gaining access to resources and mentorship that inspire bold thinking, artistic experimentation, and innovative contributions to their field.
The Center for the Art of East Asia (CAEA) at the University of Chicago is an internationally renowned academic center dedicated to the study of East Asian art and visual culture.

Arts Teaching
Teaching in the arts at UChicago is driven by a commitment to creative mentorship, rigorous pedagogy, and immersive learning. Our faculty lead stimulating seminars, workshops, and courses in areas such as theater and performance studies, music, creative writing, and cinema and media studies. Students are encouraged to take intellectual risks and collaborate across disciplines, developing a deep fluency in both artistic creation and critical reflection.
